Swedish
One of the most common massage techniques, Swedish massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. Five basic strokes are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body (a combination of kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive, and tapping movements). The many benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.
Deep Tissue
Techniques that utilize deep-tissue/deep-muscle massage are administered to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia. The muscles must be relaxed in order to effectively perform deep-tissue massage. It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation, and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendinitis. It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.
Aromatherapy
Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said that “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.” Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils (extracted from herbs, flowers, resin, woods, and roots) in body and skin care treatments. Practiced as a healing technique for thousands of years by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, essential oils aid in relaxation, improve circulation, and help the healing of wounds. Specific essential oils are blended and added to a carrier oil, or lotion, to be used during the massage. Each oil has its own unique characteristics and benefits.
Reflexology
This bodywork involves application of pressure to specific reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to other parts of the body, with the goal of stimulating body organs and relieving areas of congestion. Reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. This technique is used to reduce pain, increase relaxation, and stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It is especially useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders. Reflexology is also convenient in cases where an area of the body is traumatized or diseased to the extent that direct manipulation is not appropriate.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
Pain is the body’s signal it is being traumatized. Sometimes people feel pain in locations distant from the source of pain. These are called trigger points. In neuromuscular therapy, the therapist sees past the confusion caused by referral pain and addresses the source of dysfunction. NMT focuses on relieving trigger points by applying appropriate pressure.
Stretching
After the release of hypersensitive areas, involved muscle and connective tissues should be stretched using passive and active stretching. Slow, sustained passive stretching is encouraged to regain and maintain length of the connective and muscle tissues. Active stretching maintains body balance and elasticity and encourages healthy postural alignment. The therapist may teach or advise specific beneficial stretches for the client.
